Sightings 13/5/16

For the official record and due recognition, here is the first and original photo of the 2 Caspian Tern found by Chris Stone on 11 May on the estuary at Portbury Wharf.

We haven't heard of any Caspian sightings in the UK before 11 May and we haven't heard of any afterwards. We can only assume that these birds were on migration and were temporarily grounded by the atrocious weather on 11 May and have since moved on.

Well done Chris and thanks again for getting the news out. They must have been a tick of some kind for most local birders.

Highlights:
6Red Kite through today and our first Curlew Sandpiper of the Spring.
The Turtle Dove remained at New Passage for its 3rd day.


Kingswood (Bristol):
2 flyover Peregrine (pair) 4.15pm.

Headley Park (Bristol):
Red Kite: 1 circling over late morning (Dave Nevitt).

Bishopston (Bristol):
Red Kite: 1 flyover 4.40pm (Tim McGrath).

Sea Mills (Bristol):
6 Shelduck.

Chipping Sodbury 12/5/16:
Common: 12+ Skylark, otherwise deadly quiet.

Oldbury Power Station:
4 Canada Goose + 2 goslings, 3 Shoveler briefly, 1 Cuckoo, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Garden Warbler.

Northwick:
Red Kite: 1 flyover at the A403 early afternoon to south (Nigel Sluman).

New Passage-Northwick:
Arctic Skua: 1 flyover at the wetland 2.45pm (Paul Bowerman).
Turtle Dove: Still present around the houses but goes missing from time to time.

Other stuff, 1 Egyptian Goose, 111 Shelduck, 14 Gadwall, 7 Tufted Duck, 4 Little Grebe, 30 Oystercatcher, 3 Little Ringed Plover, 40 Ringed Plover, 11 Sanderling, 1 Little Stint, 750 Dunlin, 9 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Whimbrel, 5 Curlew, 3 Redshank, 7 BH Gull, 1 Jay, 1 singing Coal Tit, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Siskin.

Shore: 1 flyby Canada Goose, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Peregrine, 50 Ringed Plover, 3 Grey Plover, 16 Sanderling, 90 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, 1 Turnstone, 2 BH Gull, 1 Yellow-legged Gull up, 1 Little Tern up.
Orchard Pools: 4 Mallard, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Coot brood 6 chicks, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 9 Reed Warbler.

Leigh Woods:
North Rd: 1 Nuthatch, 1 Song Thrush.

Walton Down:
Red Kite: 1 flyover 4.45pm (Andrew Waygood).

Congresbury:
Osprey: 1 flyover mid-morning to north (Tim Hockey).

Clevedon coast:
Wain's Hill-Yeo Est: 1 Greylag Goose, 90 Shelduck, 2 Tufted Duck, 14 Oystercatcher, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 28 Ringed Plover, 8 Lapwing, 12 Knot, 2 Curlew Sandpiper (Yeo Est, our first of the spring, red ones too), 190 Dunlin, 5 Bar-tailed Godwit, 39 Whimbrel, 3 Curlew, 2 Redshank, 35 House Martin, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Whitethroat, 5 Sedge Warbler, 8 Reed Warbler, 100 Starling, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 1 White Wagtail.

Willsbridge Mill:

Blagdon Lake:
12 Canada Goose, 1 Barnacle Goose, 2 Gadwall of note.

Planet Chew:
Red Kite: 1 flyover at Sutton Wick 10.45am (Andy Davis).
Marsh Harrier: the usual birds seen several times again along the Moreton-Stratford bank.
