17-07-18 Tuesday - Manx Shearwaters

Mainly high cloud with sunny spells, and a fresh wind.  Still very dry, quite warm out of the wind.

Filton:
7 Canada Goose flying north low over ringroad A4174, west of MoD.

Stockwood Open Spaces: (combined report)
4 Woodpigeon, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Jay, Blue and Great Tit, 2 Blackbird, 3 Linnet, 2 Bullfinch, flock 20 Goldfinch.
4 Swift (West Town Lane).


SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Shepperdine:
1 Greenshank, 2 Whimbrel, 2 Common Sandpiper. 1 Mediterranean Gull with c.285 BH Gull.

Oldbury Pill:
adult and juv. Little Grebe which may have bred there.

Pilning wetland:
1 Wood Sandpiper (viewed from seawall by 1st sentry box), 1-2 Mediterranean Gull, c.600 BH Gull, Yellow Wagtail.

Little Sodbury (BOC walk):
1 Pheasant, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 6 Buzzard, 38 Woodpigeon, 1 Stock Dove calling, 2 Collared Dove, 7 Swift, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Jay, 3 Magpie, many Jackdaw (huge post-breeding flock), Rook (same flock), Carrion Crow, 4 Coal Tit, 10 Blue Tit, 6 Great Tit, 2 Skylark, 60 Swallow (most skimming over fields at the back of Horton Court), 8 House Martin, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap singing, 2 Goldcrest, 6 Wren, 2 Nuthatch, 3 Blackbird, 5 Robin, 17 House Sparrow, 1 Pied Wagtail, 3 Chaffinch, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Greenfinch, 19 Linnet (one flock of 10), 11 Goldfinch, 1 Yellowhammer.

Coalpit Heath:
5 Swift

1st Siskin going over today

A juvenile Goldfinch got a bit lost (John Clark)
Portishead:
2 Peregrine over the health centre.  Possibly an adult with a juv. and maybe the two seen yesterday at Clevedon.  A juv Goldfinch on a 6th-floor balcony.

Clevedon:
(yesterday) 2 Peregrine on the radio masts off Strode Road.

Sand Point/Bay:
12 Manx Shearwater up-channel at 8:40am in a single strung-out flock.

Portbury Wharf:

Nice to see a post-breeding Great White Egret back at Chew (Ian Stapp)
Chew Valley Lake

217 Canada Goose, 67 Mute Swan, the escaped Black Swan, 1 Egyptian Goose, 3 Shelduck (+ 4 well-grown ducklings), 3 Little Grebe, 98 Great Crested Grebe.

1 Great White Egret, 3 Little Egret (1 juv.), 4 Buzzard.

7 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 5 Ruff (moulting adults, including one white and one striking silvery/black), 21 Lapwing, 1 Greenshank.

26 juv. Black-headed Gull, 1 Common Gull, 3 Yellow-legged Gull (one juv., 2 reported as 3rd calendar-year), 11 GBB Gull.

4 Collared Dove. 2 Stock Dove. 4 Swift (Bishop Sutton). 2 Kingfisher. 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kestrel, 48 Jackdaw, 1 Raven, 2 LT Tit, 12+ Swallow, 7 House Martin, 4 Sand Martin, 3 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 4 Cetti's Warbler, 17 Starling, 14 Mistle Thrush, (with 41 Jackdaws in hay field at the back of Herons Green Pond), 5 Song Thrush, 14 House Sparrow, 21 Pied Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail, 8 Chaffinch, 4 Reed Bunting.

Note:  
The juvenile Yellow-legged Gull at the dam is a classic bird, seems very faithful to the location and offers stunning views coming to bread. It appears to be the only juvenile large gull at the lake at the moment.
