24th October '17 Tuesday - Hawfinches

Mild and misty morning, horrible wet afternoon.

Wheatear, Swallows and Chiffchaffs hanging on.
Flyover Hawfinches and Crossbill.
Merlin still at Oldbury.
Spotted Redshank with Redshank, neither common at Chew.

1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 4 Wren, pair Stonechat, 3 Redwing, 8 Linnet, 12 Goldfinch, 1 Bullfinch.


SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Oldbury Power Station:
Vismig watch 7:50 - 11am: c.250 Redwing, 10 Meadow Pipit, 3 Hawfinch, 1208 Chaffinch, 7+ Siskin, 3 Redpoll, 7 Reed Bunting.
1 Merlin, 15 Lapwing, 1 Snipe, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Swallow, 4 Mistle Thrush, 1 Chiffchaff.


NORTH SOMERSET:

Grey Wagtail at Portishead (Ian Bowering)
Clevedon - Wains Hill:
Migration watch: 0715-1100:  8 Pied Wagtail, 35 Meadow Pipit, 12,650 Chaffinch, 5 Greenfinch, 25
Goldfinch, 10 Linnet, 12 Siskin, 1 Crossbill, 5 Bullfinch - all headed SW.  (Chaffinch:- at least 500 every 15 minutes from 0745, with over 6000 in one hour from 0845. Most were no higher than 100 feet, but several flocks noted well above 1000 feet.)

Clevedon-Yeo:
Visible Migration. 1,000 Chaffinch, 200 Starling, 100 Meadow Pipit, 1 Redwing.  (This must be a small proportion of birds passing over. They were crossing the Yeo on a half mile front, at least. No doubt many more had passed earlier.)
200 Shelduck, 70 Wigeon, 1 Teal, 6 Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Grey Plover, 35 Turnstone, 3 Snipe, 25 Curlew, 2 GBB Gull, 1 Kestrel, 2 Wheatear, 4 Rock Pipit, 10 Skylark, 1 Cettis Warbler.

Bleadon:
16 Canada Goose, 30 Mute Swan, 1 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 1 Tawny Owl (calling), 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Jay.

6+ Mistle Thrush, 12+ Redwing, 60 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Treecreeper.
