Avon bird printable checklist

Here is a one page printable check list of the 344 species that have been seen in Avon. The list has recently been updated to the new BOU order, following the adoption of the Avilist check list of birds.

The total species seen in Avon has recently decreased due to the lumping of the redpolls, the BBRC review of Great Snipe records that left the Blagdon records ‘not proven’, and the recent BOU list changes which saw Green-winged Teal and Hooded Crow re-lumped with Teal and Carrion Crow.

The most recent additions to the list are Hume's Warbler (2023), and Booted Eagle, after the 2000 record was moved into catergory A of the British List.

There are some excellent online sites out there to keep a track of the birds you see, such as Bird Track,  https://bubo.org/ or e-bird, but hopefully this may be an interesting reference tool, or something to use when visiting the Avon area.

More details on the species seen in Avon can be found on Rich Mielcarek’s excellent Annotated Checklist of Avon Birds here (new 8th edition recently published).

Birds in bold are Avon or BBRC rareties, and notes on finding these birds in Avon will need to be submitted to the relevant committee, see this page for details.

Birds in italics are thought to currently breed in Avon on a regular basis, some in small numbers. Others may well breed here e.g. Siskin, or may hold on in very small numbers, e.g. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, but are not in italics as breeding has not been proven, or has not been proven for several years.

Letters in brackets after a species name denote thier current status in Avon, either Rare, Scarce,  Common (in the right habitat and at the right time of year) or Extirpated. Numbers in brackets denote the number of sightings of this species in Avon, giving some idea of how often these rare species are seen.

For some species, releases for shooting (e.g. Grey Partridge), or reintroduction schemes (e.g. Crane) mean the true provenance of most sightings can not be known for sure.
