23-11-23 Thursday - Bewick's Swans

Temp 9°C to 12°C.  Overcast with a shower or two inland, but fairly bright on the coast; then clearing by noon to a lovely blue sky.  A fresh and blustery West wind kept the temperature down.

A couple of late Red Admirals were reported today.

Oldbury Power Station:
60 Woodpigeon, 90 Fieldfare, 70 Redwing, 4 Siskin over this morning.
1 Treecreeper, 6 Goldcrest, 2 Chiffchaff.

Pilning Wetlands:
(yesterday, 22nd)   43 Greylag Geese, 250 Canada Geese, 12 Shelduck, 38 Shoveler, 22 Gadwall, 160 Wigeon, 260 Teal, 2 Pintail, 1 Water Rail, 3 Golden Plover, 150 Lapwing, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 46 Curlew, 100 Turnstone, 50 Dunlin, 3 Snipe, 150 Redshank, 3 Grey Heron, 1 Kestrel, 2 Peregrine, 1 Raven, 1 Cetti’s Warbler, 2 Stonechat, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Rock Pipit, 38 Siskin, at least one Twite (still on the stone wall near Chestle Pill).

Severn Beach:
(yesterday, 22nd)   16 Shelduck, 60 Wigeon, 20 Ringed Plover, 15 Turnstone, 5 Little Egret, 1 Raven, 1 Stonechat, 1 Rock Pipit.

Wickwar:
m. Tawny Owl calling, Green Woodpecker yaffling

Yate Rocks area:
c.300 Wood Pigeon in a flock, Buzzard, 2 Raven, 3 Fieldfare, 1 Redwing, m. Bullfinch, m. Chaffinch, 8 Linnet.

Yate:
Kingsgate Park: 1 f. Wigeon, Tufted Duck, 1 f. Sparrowhawk, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Chiffchaff, mixed flock of 40+ Redwing and Fieldfare over, Grey Wagtail.

NORTH SOMERSET

Portbury Wharf:
4 Shoveler, 5 Lapwing, 1 (1W) Black-necked Grebe

Portishead:
(Garden)  A new male Blackcap today following a new female yesterday (probably moving around looking for winter quarters)

27 Canada Goose, 13 Mute Swan, 94 Mallard and a white domestic duck, 22 Teal (on the sea on the sheltered north side of the promontory), 5 Tufted Duck, 12 Woodpigeon (+ c.50 over high), 3 Collared Dove, 3 Moorhen, 2 Curlew, 4 Purple Sandpiper, 61 BH Gull, 37 H Gull, 52 Carrion Crow, only 2 House Sparrow, 3 Pied Wagtail (and sundry common garden birds).

Picnic Site nr 2:
1 Great White Egret, 1 Buzzard (white one), 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Marsh Harrier,  6+ L TT, 2 Goldfinch, 20+ Chaffinch, 2 Reed Bunting.

Herons Green:
2 Little Grebe, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Great White Egret, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Pied Wagtail.

Moreton:
17 Goldeneye, 2 Scaup, 11 GC Grebe, 30+ Pochard, many Tufted Duck, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Great White Egret, presumably 37 Cattle Egret (flying towards Herriotts), 1 Marsh Harrier, 3 GBB Gull, 1 Raven, 2 Cetti's Warbler.

Stratford:
Bewick's Swan (didn't stay long), c.70 Lapwing over.

Herriotts inc Pool:
8 Shelduck, 1 Grey Heron, 15 Great White Egret in the roost, also 37 Cattle Egret, 2 GBB Gull, 40+ Common Gull, 24+ Lapwing (fly over), 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Jay, 6 Jackdaw, 2 Raven, 2 Cetti's Warbler, Bearded Tit (calling), Starling murmuration and roost, 1 Grey Wagtail, c.20 Pied Wagtail going to roost, 2 Reed Bunting.
