14-07-23 Friday - Ruff, Spot Shank & Marsh Harrier

Temp 14°C to 17°C. A thoroughly misreable day. Seems we have skipped summer and gone straight to autumn - it was slightly tempting to put the heating on today. Heavy rain most of the day made even a dog walk not a pleasant experience until a slightly drier evening. Light winds from the south and south east.

Whimbrel
Ruff
Marsh Harrier
Spotted Redshank
Mediterranean Gull

Details re the ringed Curlew at CVL that IS photo'd on 7th July (supplied by Mike Smart of WWT). . . "It’s OON (Orange Orange Black) ringed on 14th January 2016, one of the birds ringed in a BTO/WWT project on the Usk estuary in winter 2015/16. The orange over white on the left tarsus is a marker for these birds, just as yellow over white is a marker for the Curlews ringed at Wibdon from 2010 to 2013.

It has been regularly recorded in winter on the Usk estuary by Chris Wells in winters 20/21, 21/22 and 22/23. Last record on the Usk was at Peterstone (where all previous records have come from) on 25 January 2023. We don’t know where it breeds, this is the first record away from Peterstone. Looks as though it was on its way back to the Usk and stopped off at Chew. "
