Chew Valley Lake:
2 Little Egret, 2 sum plum Black-tailed Godwit, 2 sum plum Redshank, 2 ad sum plum Mediterranean Gull, 1 (1S) Little Gull, 1 ad intermedius Lesser Black-backed Gull,.

A mink trying to kill three well grown Mute Swan cygnets on the back of Denny Island but the female swan kept it at bay and eventually led them to safety in the water.

KV has never seen an intermedius at Chew before in mid-summer. Note its large size and very dark upperparts compared to the local graellsii Lesser Black-back to the left of it in the first photo (above), and behind it in the second. Note also the very long, slim bill. All in all, nothing like the diminutive small-billed, short-legged, long-winged Baltic Gulls (nominate fuscus) that occasionally turn up at Chew. (Keith Vinicombe)

Lesser Black-backed Gull of intermedius race, at Chew
(Keith Vinicombe)
For comparison, the bird on the right shows all the characters of a nominate Baltic Gull (race fuscus) next to a local graellsii Lesser Black-back on the left). The small size and structural differences from our local graellsii race and today's intermedius are very obvious. (Keith Vinicombe, May 2015)
