2-1-17 Bittern at Chew Valley Lake (Carole Finch)
Showed for a good 20 minutes at Herriot's Bridge
Cumberland Basin:
Up to 12 Redwing this afternoon, (some by the B Bond carpark and more in trees between the allotments and the railway line to Portishead). Also a Peregrine flew over, quite a large one and so probably a ♀.

Two Great White Egrets flew low over car approx 4.30pm.

New Passage/Northwick:
Water Pipit dropped into fields beyond Grebe Pond, yearlies Linnet, 2 Raven, 1 Sparrowhawk,
11 Grey Plover, Blackwit flock, Little Egret, 2 PochardOrchard Pools:
2 Peregrines together overhead (loud calling, possible pair interaction), 4 Gadwall
Severn Beach:
1 Stonechat

Chipping Sodbury Common:
Red Headed Smew, small numbers of Fieldfares and Redwings

Strawberry Line Congresbury to Yatton:
Around 50 Redwing feeding in various fields with the odd Fieldfare mixed in. Common Buzzard, Grey Heron, Chaffinches.

Portishead Boating Lake/Battery Point/East Wood:
2 Pochard, 2 Tufted Duck, Greylag, 1 Purple Sandpiper, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Nuthatch , 2-3 Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Gordano Valley:
Marsh Tit, 3 Mistle Thrush

Portbury Wharf:
6 Snipe, c50 Linnet,

12 Mute Swan, 48 Canada Goose, 120 Shelduck, 200 Wigeon, 150 Teal, Mallard present, 2 Shoveler, 2 Cormorant, 3 Little Egret, 1 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 10 Oystercatcher, 18 Grey Plover, 80 Lapwing (all at Dowlais), 100~ Curlew (60 at Dowlais), 1 Water Rail, 2 Grey Plover, 30 Turnstone, 8 Knot, 550 Dunlin, 120 Redshank (none at Yeo), 2 Jack Snipe, 32 Snipe, 2 GBB Gull,

4 Snipe. No Woodcock seen.

Bleadon and Uphill:

Brean Cross Sluice: Raven, Kestrel, Little grebe, 2 Shellduck, 11 Teal, Common Sandpiper,

Uphill: Kestrel, Short Eared Owl (have had reports that up to 5 Short-eared Owls have been seen in the Bleadon levels to Uphill area)

Weston beach had a flock of c.80 Dunlin and c.30 Ringed Plover. 
Marine Lake still held the female immature Eider, which appears to be in fine health still and feeding well on crabs.

Chew Valley Ringing Station:
2016 ringing total for the year: 3903 new birds. Nearly 800 less than 2015. Symptomatic of a poor breeding season this year.
