Woodcock survey 2023 (Red listed species)
This year the BTO in partnership with the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust are running the 10 yearly breeding Woodcock survey. Woodcock are the only breeding wader to use woodland and it's been a long long time since the last documented record of breeding Woodcock in BTO Avon Group. Having said that, zero counts are of far more conservational value than no survey at all.
We currently have a Priority square in the Six area that need surveying:
ST4259 Churchill/Sandford
ST4665 Brockley
ST5270 Long Ashton
St5574 leigh Woods
St7657 Hinton Charterhouse
St7168 Lansdown (Bath)
The survey requires a maximum of four visits, in reality it will be three. The first visit should be undertaken in April for no other reason than to find the best point from which to carry out the survey. The next two visits will be to record the presence / absence of Woodcock between 1st May-30th June with visits being at least 1 week apart. The fourth visit would only take place in the unlikely event of Woodcock being present.
To take part in the survey you must have knowledge of Woodcock. You do not need to be an existing Member of BTO but you will need an online account.
This can be set up here - https://www.bto.org/user/
Those with an online account already can request a square here -
https://app.bto.org/woodcock/
Back to the newcomers, once an online account has been set up, you can register for the survey in "My BTO" here -
https://www.bto.org/my-bto?
A square can then be requested here - https://app.bto.org/woodcock/
