Summary:
Our first Willow Warbler today plus an upsurge in Chiffchaff and Wheatear sightings.
The Smew still at Chipping Sodbury and the Slavonian Grebe still at Planet Chew.
Little Ringed Plover at Severnside and Portbury but generally still a shortage of small waders at the coastal sites.
23 Common Scoter off Clevedon noteworthy.

Otter Sightings: Otter Gill says thank you for all the sightings us birders have sent in recently. So much so in fact, that she is thinking of taking up birding in order to see more Otters herself....

Sightings 29/3/16

LOST: We found some wildlife club membership cards at Stratford hide this afternoon. Please e-mail us if you think they might be yours.
We will hand them in at Woodford Lodge on our next visit.

Summary:
A day of very heavy showers. A Slavonian Grebe new in at Planet Chew where also 500+ rain induced Sand Martin.
The Smew remained at Chipping Sodbury and there were 4 Little Ringed Plover at New Passage.
A Short-eared Owl at Clevedon and 6 Crossbill at Walton Common also of note.

This is how Aythya hybrids occur...

Summary:
A few seabirds seen today on the coat-tails of storm Katie. 2 Eider off Anchor Head of particular note, this species is pretty scarce in Avon.
The Smew was still at Chipping Sodbury (2 day long-stayer), plus a flyover Red Kite too.

Summary:
A windy day with some very heavy showers which grounded large numbers of Sand Martin at Planet Chew and Blagdon.
The Chipping Sodbury Smew re-appeared today out of the blue.
Scaup and Water Pipit still showing well at Planet Chew (Moreton).

A young birder is rarer than a diving Gannet at Planet Chew....

Summary:
A lovely sunny spring day but not much new in the way of migrants except for a House Martin at Sand Pt.
 A Red Kite and 4 Bearded Tit also of particular note. Quite a few butterflies of various species out today, especially Brimstone.

Wet and windy over the next few days which may produce some seabirds off Severn Beach.

it took 2 attempts, but we finally got all 10 birds...
Purple Sandpiper is an uncommon winter visitor into Avon, Nov-April. In recent years there have been only 2 fairly reliable roosts in the county, at Portishead and Sand Pt. The Portishead birds are particularly observer-friendly....and only 60yds from the car.

The latest departure date for Fieldfare in Avon is 8 May (1982) so we're likely to see them around for quite a few more weeks though most will have already bunked off by now.


Summary: A lovely spring day, calm with plenty of sunshine. Migrants still rather scarce, more singing Chiffchaff and our first Swallow today.
2 more Red Kite (makes about 14 so far this month) and 6 flyover Crane at Congresbury of note.

We are getting an increasing number of Crane records in recent years, no doubt arising from the Great Crane Project though it's possible that some sightings may involve genuinely wild bird as well.

Lovely thermals, an incredible 70 Buzzard over Burledge Hill near Planet Chew.

Several species of Butterfly also out on the wing.
