'At the end of Feb I was amazed to watch a pair of Blackbirds nest building in my garden in that bad weather. Sure enough, they started feeding recently and I ringed the brood of three nestlings on Weds (25th). I can see the nest site from my study window and have been very unscientific in chasing away potential predators (Carrion Crow, Magpie). The male has developed unusual tactics in trying not to give away the nest location. Instead of making the normal series of approach flights before entering the cover he would hop along the lawn, pretending to feed, then would scuttle in under the bush and out of sight. This morning I was woken up at 06:45 (BST) by the parents' alarm calls and rushed out in my dressing gown to chase away a domestic cat. I must be getting soft. Keeping fingers crossed that they’ll fledge ok next week. Is that the earliest report for breeding songbirds in the Avon area?'
