18-4-20 Great Spotted Woodpecker tail, Cameley (Bob Medland)
Yesterday retrapped a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, both old friends: the female is 5 years old with her toy-boy male just 2 years old. The state of the male’s tail was somewhat worn. This is c.9 months after it was replaced in last year’s full moult and doesn’t matter too much: males do a share (majority?) of the incubating around here and will moult tail feathers once off the nest and young have fledged June/July.
