Sightings 21/8/2016

WeBS Count day.  Blustery and mostly overcast/wet again, but mild.

Bird of the day: Storm Petrel.  See the Twitter feed for loads of great photos, including some of the bird taken into care, and a not-so-nice photo of the fate that can await them when the gulls find them upriver. First bird found by Mark Coller, then many obs.

Bristol, Stapleton (River Frome, Eastville Park - Snuff Mills):
Buzzard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, pair Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail.

20 Swift, 100+ House Martin.

Bristol, Stockwood Open Space:
1 Buzzard, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 7 House Martin, 4 Whitethroat, 2 Jay, 15 Goldfinch.

Bristol, Three Brooks Nature Reserve:
1 Little Egret, Never been seen here before

Oldbury Power Station:
67 Canada Goose, 52 Ringed Plover, 43, Dunlin, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Common Sandpiper,

Severn Beach:
Three terrible shots of Storm Petrels off Severn Beach

At least 6 Storm Petrel (and 9+ reported from Goldcliff - the other side - this morning)..  One picked up and taken into care but died.  Also reported: Fulmar going upriver at Sharpness.   2 Gannet, Common Tern, Black Tern off Severn Beach.   Pity all those poor WeBS counters who had to be elsewhere!
60 Oystercatcher,  40 Ringed Plover, 120 Dunlin, 3 Curlew Sandpiper, Whimbrel, 70 Turnstone,













New Passage and Pilning Wetlands:
7 Ringed Plover, 3 Curlew Sandpiper, Snipe, 57 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Greenshank, 3 Green Sandpiper, 1 Black Tern, Kingfisher, 3 Yellow Wagtail. More info and photos on Severnside Birds.

River Avon and Sea Mills:
Little Grebe family (2 ad + 3 juv) at Hoar Gout;  2 Grey Heron, 24 Redshank, 6 Common Sandpiper, 26 LBB Gull of which  2 ad + 24 juv.

Royal Portbury Dock:
1+ Storm Petrel, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Whimbrel

Portbury:
9 Mute Swan, 2 Canada Goose, 17 Gadwall, 2 Teal, 9 Mallard, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Little Grebe, 23 Coot, 8 Moorhen, 21 BH Gull, 7 LBB Gull.

Clevedon-Yeo:
15 Little Egret, 1 juv Little Ringed Plover, 6 Ringed Plover, 5 Dunlin, 1 juv Ruff, 10 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Bar-tailed Godwit, 155 Curlew, 4 Common Sandpiper, 12 Turnstone,  40+ Swallow, 2 Rock Pipit, 5 Wheatear.

Saltford:
7 Red-legged Partridge, 1 Grey Heron, Stock Dove, 9 Swallow, 1 Grey Wagtail, 4 Chiffchaff.

Blagdon Lake:
Little Egret, Egyptian Goose, 1 Garganey, 1 Gannet (probable 4th year), 5 Oystercatcher (2 ad + 3 juv), 5 Ringed Plover, juv Sanderling, 2 Common Sandpiper, 3 Common Tern, 1 Common Gull (early returner?).

Chew Valley Lake:
7 adult Little Egret, 2 adult Great White Egret (1 Stratford end, 1 HGB that flew off towards Villice), 2 Garganey, several Dabchicks with 1 juv (villice), 5 Oystercatcher, 9 Lapwing, 23 Dunlin, 2 Black-tailed Godwit (Herriotts), 3 Common Sandpiper, 5 Redshank circled Herons Green 1 landed on the dam and 4 flew off in the direction of Blagdon 2 Little Gull (1 was 1W), 3 Common Tern (ad + 2 juv), 1 juv Arctic Tern, 3 juv Black Tern, 1 Wheatear
