19-05-18 Saturday - Cuckoo, Spot Fly

A continuation of yesterday: sunny, dry, warm, with light wind.

Very few reports - has everyone's attention been absorbed by the two matches taking place today?

Eastville Park:
1 Cuckoo (only the second at this site that observer can recall)

Glenfrome School, BS5:
1 Garden Warbler

1 Swift (first of year here)


New Passage/Northwick:
1 Cuckoo 

Severn Beach:
(notables from BBS second visit) 3 Swift, Long-tailed Tit, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, Bullfinch

Orchard Pools:
Reed Warbler ('Plenty '), 1 Spotted Flycatcher
Also  'numerous' Four Spotted Chaser plus  a few similar size blue/green dragonflies (probably Hairy Dragonfly )

Early WeBS Count - 3 Mute Swan (1 adult on nest), 20 Mallard (including 9 Ducklings), 1 Moorhen, 4 Coot, 3 Grey Heron (1 Adult on nest)

Usual patch walk -  4 Buzzard, 17 Swift, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Kestrel,  2 Raven, 2 Jay, 5 Barn Swallow, 5 House Martin, 2 Long-Tailed Tit, 2 Chiffchaff , 2 Whitethroat, 1 Goldcrest,  1 Starling, 3 Song Thrush,3 Pied Wagtail, 2 Greenfinch, 20 Goldfinch

Nightingales at Lodge Hill:
This site has the highest number of Nightingales, 85 out 5,500, anywhere in the UK. Medway council want to allocate this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for development. Please go to to urge Medway Council to protect this site
