Aust, Extra-high tide 8.30am:
c.40 Shelduck, c.100 Wigeon, 4 Teal, 1 Water Rail (jumping up in reed bed as tide rose), flock c.30 Golden Plover flying over, 1 Curlew, 4 Short-eared Owl,  1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine, 2 Stonechat, 4 Reed Bunting
The sea came across the salt marsh up to but not over the road; when it was halfway across, the rapidly-moving backs of little mammals could be seen swimming fast to the next piece of grass... The Crows were there first, casually picking up small rodents like hors d’oeuvres and flying off with their limp bodies. The Owls and Kestrels sat on logs and branches and seemed less interested – maybe they’d already had a glut? And unlike the other times I’ve witnessed this phenomenon, only a few BH Gulls arrived and again were less predatory…
