25-07-19 Thursday - Spotted Flycatcher

Nationally [and in parts of Europe]  a day of record-breaking heat.
Here it was just baking hot, climbing to 33.2 °C

Filton:
8 Swift, 5 Raven - a  family party 'flying into and through large pine next door, putting up the local birds: a young family party? – one making strange high ‘haven’t got the hang of this cronking’ sound…'

SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Oldbury Power Station:
A flock of 11 Cormorant flew high over to East (mainly juvs.), 5 Lesser Whitethroat (2 family groups; 3x Lag 3, 2x Lag1), 4 Mistle Thrush on Lagoon 1 (probably a family that bred here), 1 Yellow Wagtail

25-07-19 Sparrowhawk with Starling prey, Yate (Chris Teague)

Yate:
A Sparrowhawk caught a Starling in the garden and started plucking it. I had to go out and thought it would just carry its prey off. Very surprised when Sparrowhawk flew one way and the Starling the other. I thought it was dead!

Natural England has just published its proposals for the coastal path thru our area.  


There are maps and lots of reading......  Whether this will ever come about is anyone's guess, the proposed costs are enormous - £200,000 for the area around Clevedon alone!!
