Sightings 5/4/16

5/4/16 the White Stork at The Levels, Somerset (Jeff Hazell)
Bird turned up today. It was fairly settled until the farmer started spraying the field...
White Stork is a rarity in Avon, about 11 records 1971-2012.


Summary:
1 Osprey through, 2 Crane at Planet Chew.
Our first Reed Warblers today at Yatton and Planet Chew. Few Willow Warbler today, yesterday we were awash with them.


Stockwood (Bristol):
Bifield Rd: 1 Skylark, 2 Starling, 20 House Sparrow, 3 Greenfinch, 15 Goldfinch.

Frenchay (Bristol):
River Frome: 1 Buzzard, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Jay, 2 Chiffchaff.

Snuff Mills (Bristol):
1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Dipper.

Eastville Park (Bristol):
2 Mute Swan (nesting), 6 Canada Goose, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Buzzard, 2 LBB Gull, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Grey Wagtail.

Ashton Court (Bristol):
Mansion House environs: 4 Buzzard, 5 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Coal Tit, 15 Chiffchaff, 1 Treecreeper, 11 Nuthatch....heaven knows what the true population in the Park is.

2 Canada Goose, 2 Red-legged Partridge, 1 Peregrine, 200 Woodpigeon, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Marsh Tit, 1 Sand Martin, 2 Blackcap, 2 Song Thrush, 2 Nuthatch, 1 Wheatear, 5 Grey Wagtail.

Chipping Sodbury:
Common: 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Redstart plus many Skylark and Chiffchaff.
The Smew also still at anchor.

Oldbury Power Station:
1 Red-breasted Merganser down this morning of note, otherwise pretty quiet.

New Passage-Northwick:
6 Gadwall, 74 Teal, 4 Shoveler, 10 Tufted Duck, 3 Little Egret, 4 Little Grebe, 20 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Swallow.

Abbots Leigh:
Pool car-park environs: 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Goldcrest, 5 Chiffchaff, 4 Nuthatch.

Portbury Wharf:
Wharf Lane: 2 Redstart, in the horse paddock (Paul Bowdler). Good spot for them here in recent years. Park in the small car-par and walk along path to gate which overlooks the horse-field.

200 flyover Swallow to east 8pm.

Clapton Moor:
1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 male Redstart.

Congresbury Moor:
4 Raven, 3 Skylark, 6 Chiffchaff, 5 Willow Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Reed Bunting.

Yatton:
Strawberry Line: 1 Water Rail, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 9 Chiffchaff, 4 Willow Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 1 Reed Warbler (Steve Sanins).

Sand Pt:
1 Peregrine, 6 Coal Tit, 2 Swallow, 10+ Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcap, 1 Nuthatch, 1 Wheatear. Inexplicably, no Willow Warbler after 50+ here yesterday.

Uphill NR:
5/4/16 Falcon sp (George Rabin)
any comments anyone..?
David Gibbs: is this the Falcon sp you saw at W-s-M yesterday....very fast flyover, this was the best George could do.

East Dundry:
8 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 1 Sand Martin, 5 Swallow, 3 Redstart, 4 Chaffinch, 3 Siskin.

Willsbridge Mill:
1 Jay, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 15 Chiffchaff, 1 Nuthatch, 1 Treecreeper, 5 Goldfinch.

Backwell Lake:
9 Mute Swan, 11 Canada Goose, 4 House Sparrow of note...a lot of disturbance here, control boats, dogs in water etc...

Paulton:
Sewage Works: 5 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Siskin.

Elm Farm: 8 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Swallow, 1 House Martin, 8 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Nuthatch, 1 Treecreeper, 2 Brambling, 10 Linnet, 20 Yellowhammer.

Blagdon Lake:
22 Canada Goose, 2 Shelduck, 5 Shoveler, 34 Snipe, 1 Common Sandpiper, 220 LBB Gull, 12 Herring Gull, 21 Chiffchaff, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Nuthatch.

Planet Chew:
Osprey: 1 fly-through at Heron's Green 9am, came from the Blagdon direction (Nick Roberts).
Crane: 2 flying around the lake 12.35-1pm (Rich Mielcarek, Ian Stapp). 4 over the lake on 1 April.
